If your veterinarian recommends cat or dog surgeries, you may have several questions. Will it be safe? Will my pet be in pain? How long will it take them to heal? We can answer all of these questions and more at Dundee Animal Hospital, where our team puts patient safety above everything else. Your pet is a beloved part of your family, and we know how important it is to give them the best possible care while they are with us. Furthermore, as an AAHA-accredited hospital, you can rest assured that we will take every measure necessary to make sure your pet is healthy, happy and pain-free when they leave our facility.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Cat & Dog Surgeries

Before: Your pet will have an anesthetic and pain management protocol tailored to their specific needs. Creating this protocol requires a pre-surgical exam and testing to gauge their current health status. This will help us determine whether we need to take any special steps to ensure their safety during surgery. The findings we obtain from this initial step are also necessary for administering the correct anesthesia levels. The day of your pet’s surgery, we will pre-medicate your pet with a light sedative and analgesics (pain relief medication). We will then place a catheter for giving IV fluids, along with medication to help us place a tracheal tube for intubation if necessary.

During: During every cat or dog surgery, we will maintain a sterile, safe environment and use a sterile surgical pack exclusive to their procedure. An experienced technician will monitor your pet’s heart rate, heart rhythm, blood pressure and oxygen levels throughout the surgery. We also monitor your pet’s vital signs while they are waking up in our recovery area.

After: Your pet will continue receiving fluids and additional medication if necessary to help their recovery go smoothly. One of our team members will reach out to let you know how your pet is doing, and when you can expect to bring them home. We will provide you with take-home pain relief medication (in liquid or tablet form), along with instructions for managing your pet’s care in the following days. Medical Boarding and Overnight Care

Our Dundee location is happy to offer medical boarding or 24/7 overnight care for its patients. This way, we will not need to transfer your pet to another hospital if they need further treatment or supervision. Our medical boarding service is especially ideal for pets that are diabetic and need routine insulin injections, and for pets taking multiple medications. If you like, you may also board your other “healthy” pet to accompany their sibling. The standard boarding fee will apply, and your pets must be up-to-date on their distemper combination and kennel cough vaccinations.

Your pet will be in good hands during their stay with us, and you are more than welcome to call at any time to check on them. They will be staying in a comfortable, secure space and walked every 2-4 hours as appropriate.
